Hydrilla comes back mainly because it stores energy in tubers buried in the lake sediment, which can stay dormant for years before sprouting. It also spreads from stem fragments and buds (turions), and it can move in from nearby untreated areas. Because no method removes every tuber, the practical approach is regular maintenance that catches regrowth early.

The three ways hydrilla survives

1. Tubers in the sediment

Hydrilla forms small, potato-like tubers on its roots, buried in the lake bed. They store energy and can stay viable for years, then sprout when conditions are right. Cutting the plant above the sediment doesn't remove them, and nothing short of dredging removes all of them.

2. Turions (buds)

Turions are compact buds that form along the stems. They break off, sink, and grow into new plants.

3. Fragments

Even a short piece of stem can root and start a new plant. That's why chopping, mowing, and prop-wash make things worse, and why collecting everything you cut matters so much.

Other reasons it returns

  • Neighboring growth: if the docks and coves around you aren't cleared, fragments drift in.
  • Constant-level lakes: lakes like Lake Austin, Lake LBJ, and Lake Marble Falls keep the same shallows available all season.
  • Warm, clear water: Central Texas summers are ideal growing conditions.

What actually works long term

  1. Clear it at the base, not just the surface.
  2. Remove every piece from the water.
